I have two large, static files identically laid out that must be combined into a pivot table. I've tried the multi-range selection in the wizard, but the result gives "dummy" field buttons (such as Row, Column, Page, Data) rather than the "real" field buttons (ie., the column headers). How to create a pivot table with all this data using the real field buttons?? Thanks very much in advance.

How to show all formulas in Excel?
Press Ctrl+` to show all formulas. Press it again to toggle back to numbers. The grave accent is often under the tilde on US keyboards.
The option in question is labelled "Multiple consolidation ranges". To use this option your data should conform to that used for worksheet Consolidations. See the Excel Help topic, "Consolidate data by category", for a thorough understanding of this concept.
