multiple vlookups if certains conditions are met

I have a list of 8 products. For production purposes, certain products can only be ran after certain other products and can only be preceded by certain products. For example: product 1 can follow products 2-6, but never by products 7 & 8 and can only be proceded by products 5-8.

I want to be able to select the products from a drop down list (I know how to do validation) for all 8 types of products to be ran each month and have it tell me if each step in the sequence is ok according to the product mix rules). (The sequence changes each month.)


It seems like it would take some "if", "vlookup" stuff but I am not sure how to make that happen. Any suggestions woudl be greatly appreciated.

All very possible. Anything you can logically lay out in your head can be trained into an Excel spreadsheet.

So, lay it out, figure out all the rules about items and their process orders. Put it in a chart, layout your desired test visually, and post it up and I'm sure we can help turn that into formulas.

What I would like to see is something like this where each step indicates an ok or not ok and if all the steps are ok the at the bottom the entire schedule is ok etc.....

First, best to work with text when text is the data, not number. Here's your chart with the product names listed and simple CONCATENATION formulas creating the acceptable strings. In the coming formula, I really only used the columns B and C, A wasn't really necessary.
