Multiple words + calculations

Hi, I'm not sure if this is possible, can anyone tell me if it is and if so, how it's done.
I have multiple words with multiple values that are attached to the words.. what I want to be able to do is type a word and have it populate the next column with a number. for example, if I type in apple it should populate the column next to it with 1, and if I type in Grape it must populate it with 2, and if I type in pear it must populate it with 3 etc etc..

would really appreciate it if anyone can help..

It sounds like VLOOKUP would do what you want.
