My brain hurts - search multiple columns

Ok i'm about to have an anurisium.

I've got 5 columns of data with random numbers ranging from 1 to 26 along with a date column - similiar to this

Date Num1 Num2 Num3
10/03/06 1 4 8
10/04/06 2 5 7
10/05/06 9 3 1
10/03/06 2 8 5

etc etc

I've looked high and i've looked low and can't seem to find my solution, so i'm hoping that you all can help me. I write some complex formulas but this one is baffling me.

I need to look through columns B C and D repsectively for the number "5" and when the fomula finds the first refrence to this number displays the date from column A

Sounds simple but we know VLookup wont work. I've seen example after example of INDEX -- MATCH but the values being looked up are different.

Thanks for some advise.
