I am in need of saving myself MANY tedious hours of using the "name box" repeatedly on a long list of data (anywhere from 2000-20000 rows).

Specifically, a macro I could run to generate a name to many unique data strings. A bit of important information: all the data is contained to a single column and each data string to be named is separated by a cell space. The "Name" to be assigned to each data string is listed, in order, within the next column. For example,

There might be a way to do your process without adding thousands of names to your environment.

There are a few reserved names that can't be used: "C","R" and "RC".
For these names, the code adds an underscore, as in "C_"

What did you want to do with the letter names after "Z"?
For this code, I assumed you want to continue onto AA, AB, etc...

Thank you for your help. The macro code is very close to what I need. I've tried to make sense of your code to modify it, but I can't.
Naming the data strings from Column "A" worked perfectly. What I need to happen with the Column "B" data is opposite of how your macro works.
Instead of the macro naming the data strings alphabetically starting with "A", I need them to be named based on information in Column "B".
Below is a more realistic snapshot of my data. The data from A1:A4 needs to be named "Classics_New_Millennium_Classics_02"; The data from A6:A8 needs to be named "All_Time_Diamond_Kings_02" and so forth. I have formatted all my data from column B to adhere to the constraints of the "Name Box" function (no spaces and such).

Yes, but you'll have to explain the "rules" on that a little more. What happens if there is text in:
Column B only -> Use Column B for the name
Column C only -> Use Column C for the name
Columns B & C only -> ??
Neither Columns B or C -> ??

To explain the following question more clearly...

My worksheet contains more than 50 columns of data, organized in columns of two. If you notice in the example data I gave you, Column "B" data contains "_02" at the end of each cell. This is referencing the year...2002. So, picture my worksheet starting with data from 1986 (Column A & B) and currently going to 2011 (Column AW & AX). Each year I keep adding two columns of data and would need to use the timesaving macro you are creating to generate "Names" for each data range. Of the group of two columns, the left column will always be the data and the right column will always be what each range of data is to be "Named".

Okay, now I get the picture.

One other thing....the macro is using a temporary formula to tag the start and finish rows of each name range. The formula was based on the rule that the range group are the cells between the blank cells in Col A. This worked for your first posted screen shot in which Cell A1 was blank. In your second shot, Cell A1 is the first row of data and the formula as written will find A6:A8 to be the first range group between blanks.

I could edit the formula to make an exception for the first row, but it will be simpler if you can start with a blank cell in Row 1.

I'm trying to figure out what you are planning on doing with all those names.
Specifically, how you are going to be witting all those formulas that refer to the names.

Might it be better to write a UDF like NthDataRange() that takes a number and returns a range. Then =NthDataRange(Match("Classics_New_Millennium_Classics_02", B:B, 0)) would return the appropriate range.

Depending on where you are using these names, a UDF might not be needed.

Mike's concern is the same one I stated initially. (although he's offered a solution instead of just an eek emoticon!) :biggrin:

I've already updated the name-creating macro, so I'll post it just in case you decide to go that route. However, I'd encourage you to explore alternatives like the one Mike suggests.

The macro works perfectly. I also located within your code, where I would need to edit the column to adjust accordingly.

For now, this macro will work great, but I will continue to look for more simplied methods.
