nedd some excel help please

hi there new to this board, need some expert help.
ok this is probably very simple for you guys, i have a financial spread sheet layout.
now i want to have a gross total in say coloum A1, then i wish to enter amounts in A2,A3,A4 etc, i then want these amounts to be deducted from A1 and the remaining total shown in say A30

i have tried =a1-a2:a30.......

i am an absolut novice at this any help appreciated

try =A1-SUM(A2:A29)

Enter this in A30

If the layout is fixed, that is, it doesn't change, then you could simply enter in A30:

=A1-SUM(A2:A29)
