Need help with summarizing from a table - dsum?

For example, my worksheet is setup like this:

New York California California New York
Company1 Company2 Company3 Company4
Sales 1000000 2000000 Income
Expenses 4444 44444 Income
Cash 1000 500 Balance Sheet
Receivables 5 100 Balance Sheet

I want to create a formula that pulls the subtotal of all balance sheet item amounts for a particular state... so as in this example the total for california would be $11,505

I have a dsum formula for the income vs balance sheet #, but how would I go about breaking it down further by state?

Excel Facts

Remove leading & trailing spaces
Save as CSV to remove all leading and trailing spaces. It is faster than using TRIM().
hmm... I have some experience with pivot tables but I'm looking for something thats easily updated as changes are made and can be linked to
