newbie with question on negative numbers

Hi I am new to this site and excel, I suppose to the experts I am now going to ask a really simple question I am setting up a set of accounts on excel and I need a column to add to a negative value even though its positive figures i.e its expenses but I am adding them up in positive format but I need a negative answer because I need to subtract them. Please help anyone.

=-(a1+a2+a3) where a1:a3 are all positive values, but the result is negative???
