I have Column A with a name
Columns B, C, D have numbers

I want to be able to enter a name and a number, and get back the index of the next larger number for the specific name. (Note the index does not have to match the number typed in the heading, the array possition is OK)

I tried array formula =MATCH(name_selected,(list_names)*(data),-1), but no luck :(

Excel Facts

Format cells as date
Select range and press Ctrl+Shift+3 to format cells as date. (Shift 3 is the # sign which sort of looks like a small calendar).
The formula I tried was actually
=MATCH(number_selected,(name_selected=Names)*(data),-1)
But not that it matters, since it does not work :)
