No sum on status bar

I have data which I copy and paste into Excel from an on-line bank statement. When I select the column containing the amounts I used to get the "count", "average" and "sum" displayed on the status bar. I now only get the "count". I have rightclicked on the status bar and both sum and average are selected but for some reason will not show on screen. I am also unable to change the format of the data. If I rightclick and select a different format (say display minus amounts in red) the actual data does not reflect the new format. I have tried copying and pasting the data into another column and tried paste special, values. I have to overtype the data to get it to reflect the new format. I am using Excel 2007

Why does 9 mean SUM in SUBTOTAL?
It is because Sum is the 9th alphabetically in Average, Count, CountA, Max, Min, Product, StDev.S, StDev.P, Sum, VAR.S, VAR.P.
Sounds like the 'values' are actually text. This would explain why they can be counted but not summed or averaged.

I expect you have text entriesthat look like numbers. Try selecting them, choosing Data|Text to Columns and clicking Finish.
