not able to modify

I have a user with several workbooks that he is trying to modify. It has a password to modify on it. He is trying to make changes and puts in the password to modify correctly. When he tries to make a change it tells him he needs to put in the pw so he can modify it. It also says [shared] on top and if I try to unshare it, there is an error that the file is locked even though nobody else has it open and it is on my C: drive. Any ideas where to start? Thanks

And.... when I try to close the file it also is saying that the file is locked. There are several macros that run when it is opened, but I am not able to open the macros either.

What is the exact locked error message?

You won't be able to modify the macros while it is shared, so you are correct to unshare it first if you need to.
