Number Locking Not Working

Hi all,

I am creating a Covariance Matrix and trying to do so by locking certain ranges so I can drag the formulas across and downward.

But for some reason, the letter section of my range will not lock. For example,

D$5:D$159

Should return an E$5:E$159 for the next row if the formula is dragged downward.

But, it continues as D$5:D$159.

If I lock the "D", as in $D5:$D159, the number DOES change.

If I lock both the letter and the number, nothing changes; which is the same result I get from just locking the number.

Are there any thoughts on why this might be?

Thanks guys.

Troy

Excel Facts

What is =ROMAN(40) in Excel?
The Roman numeral for 40 is XL. Bill "MrExcel" Jelen's 40th book was called MrExcel XL.
Dragging downwards increments the row reference not the column reference, which increments when you drag to the right. If you post your formula someone may be able to amend it.
