One cell higher than other formula

I am working on some budgets and have a cell with one value (3 year average) and another cell with a different value (last year). I'm trying to create an IF formula so that if cell A1 is greater than cell A2, use A1 and if cell A2 is greater than cell A1 use cell A2.

Any help please?

=MAX(A1,A2)
