I am interested in learning how to open a file as read only sometimes and not read only other times. I don't want to set a specific file to always open read only, but I want to have the option of opening any of hundreds of files on the network read only. I would like this to just happen on my computer, not anyone else's on the network. I am using Excel 2007.

Using Windows 7, if I do shift and right-click on a file from Windows Explorer, one of the options is Open as Read-Only. This seems like a perfect solution, but when I select this, the file opens with read-write access.

Does anyone know of a way to accomplish this?

How to fill five years of quarters?
Type 1Q-2023 in a cell. Grab the fill handle and drag down or right. After 4Q-2023, Excel will jump to 1Q-2024. Dash can be any character.
Thanks, sijpie. It works! I usually open files from Windows Explorer so I'll have to get used to opening them from Excel instead.
