open file excell diferent format

i can't open my excell when i open it sho notification that : the file are trying to open is in a different format than specified by the file extension. if i enter yes my workbook is blank

Did you change the file extention AFTER the file was saved as something else? For example you save the file and it is "Myfile.csv" and you changed it to "Myfile.xls" by right clicking the icon and selecting rename?

As dchaney suggested, more time than not it is because it really isn't an Excel file. You can give any file an Excel extension, that doesn't make it an Excel file.
I once had a co-worker think that you could convert a CSV file to an Excel file simply by going in to Windows Explorer and changing the file extension!
I would recommend trying to open the file with a text editor. If you can, and the data is readable, it means that you actually have some sort of text file and not an Excel file.
