Hello All.
I'm just trying to open a URL that is a webpage in a cell via a keyboard shortcut.
Thing is,, I don't know the shortcut. :(

I have searched,, I just can't seem to see it.

I can open a hyperlink dialog box (CTRL + k)
I also saw something about Shift + F10,, but this did nothing in my excel.

I'm using excel 2010,
Example :
Cell D12 contains the (blue coloured hyperlink) www.JobShopUK.com
If I right click >Edit hyperlink> the URL Address is http://www.jobshopuk.com/

So,, if I use the arrow keys to navigate directly to cell D12,,, what shortcut keyboard command can I use to open the webpage in my default browser?

My sheet is protected,, but I can select this cell.

I even went to YouTube,, & searched "open url keyboard shortcut excel",, but couldn't see anything specific to my question.
& here;
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/keyboard-shortcuts-in-excel-2010-HP010342494.aspx

Does anybody know the answer?
I'm all ears. :)

Many Thanks
JC

Hi, :)

a combination of keys I do not know, but VBA can do this with "Application.OnKey", or "Worksheet_SelectionChange".

Many thanks for your reply Case,,

I know F2 allows you to enter into the selected cell,,,
I just assumed there must be a keyboard command to open a URL in a web browser.
Seems not then? :(

So,, the worksheet needs some VBA code?
Any idea how it would look? My VBA coding is ,,, well,,,, non-existent to be honest ,, well,, almost,,
(Although I have just started an ECDL extra course),, might help me a bit :)

As a note,,
All my hyperlinks (URLs are in 1 Column; Column D,, Range D5:D30)
Worksheet called "Agencies & Portals"

I'll try and google it also,, just thought I didn't need VBA,,

If you do have any ideas Case,, I'm all ears.

many Thanks again

I've just done some searching for VBA code to open a URL in a new window.
,,, found the following 2,, will try ,,, but I did see something somewhere that said "THIS IS BAD PRACTICE!" ,,, not sure why.

here's the code;
Code:
Sub gotourlvariable()
ActiveWorkbook.FollowHyperlink Address:="http://" & ActiveCell.Value
End Sub

Code 2
Code:
Dim sURL As String
sURL = "http://" & ActiveCell.Value
ActiveWorkbook.FollowHyperlink Address:=sURL, _
NewWindow:=True

here's something I just saw,,, a guy called "jimmyTheHand" said here;
http://forums.techguy.org/business-applications/1056831-excel-macro-open-then-close.html
Code:
"Sorry, I thought NewWindow=False would do the trick. If it doesn't then I can't help on this path.
I suggest we take the other path. Here's a code that hopefully does what I think you want.
I took your code and also took the liberty to tailor it a bit.
I must add, however, that using Selection and ActiveCell is bad practice."

Is "ActiveCell" a bad idea,, or poorly used in the above 2 codes????

I'll try them both in a minute,, see if they work..
Any feedback would be great.
All the best

Actually,,,
the above 2 codes still need a macro button assigned :(,,,,,,
Dam,, didn't see/think about this

anyway to open a active cell with a URL in a web browser via VBA without assigning a macro button?

:)
Difficult,,
I'll get back to google

Thanks Andrew :)
(Not sure if that is Sarceeee or not :)

yes,, of course I can use the mouse,,,
Thing is,, I've started a computer course,, I'm trying to learn many keyboard shortcuts.
At the start of this post I just assumed there would be an excel shortcut combo to open a URL in an active cell.

Seems there isn't?
(Unless you know otherwise,,, if so please tell,, been searching for ages),,,,

If there isn't,,
then,, without an actual macro button assigned,, but using VBA,,
Anyway I can open a active cell that contains a URL in my default web browser using a keyboard shortcut?

Thanks for your reply Andrew.
Trying do be a keyboard only geek!! :)

Many Thanks

Here's a test sheet link;

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/16052166/URL Test Sheet.xlsx

All I want to do is navigate with my keyboard arrows to any URL cell.
So, in my example sheet,, say I go to Cell D6,,,(www.Adecco.co.uk)

what is the best solution (Without using the mouse) to open this URL in my default web browser?

I might then navigate to another link & do the same,,open it,, but question is how?

If anybody has a VBA solution or something (Where I don't need to assign the VBA to a macro button),, I'm all ears.

Many Thanks

OK,,
I think I've found a way to open URL via keyboard only (No Mouse) in a cell without VBA.
But,, I have a problem :(

1. I select cell
2. I need to (SHIFT +F10),,, but it doesn't work for my on my PC? (I'm using excel 2010 & windows 7 64bit
3. I navigate down to open hyperlink
4. click enter
5. Job Done! :)

What has thrown me is why my SHIFT + F10 doesn't open the right click context menu??
That's why I've kind of gone off on a tangent.
Any ideas why it doesn't work in my excel 2010?

If I can just get this to work,,(The right click part via a keyboard shortcut,, I've cracked it)
I have a std Logitech keyboard mouse combo. (MX5500),,, should be ok,, has std F keys

All the best

Man,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I've just found out why!!!!!!!!!!

SNAGIT!!! (A screen capture program)

In the options of SnagIT,, I have selected (I think as STD SHIFT F10 for Video Capture Stop) !!!!

So,, I've changed this to Shift F11

Now,, in excel,, if I press Shift F10,, I get the right click context menu!!!!!!!!!!
:)

Only taken me 2 1/2 hrs to get it!!,,, find out why I didn't get the context menu in excel via keyboard shortcut :(

Hey ho,, now I can open URLs in active cell using keyboard only.
So,, be careful of other programs using the same keyboard Combos,, as it can make some of the excel keyboard shortcuts invalid!!

All the best
