Open with to Notepad comes up garbled

Hello,
I have Office 2007 and trying to open an excel file with notepad.
I do not know where to begin to figure out if it is a template or not but when we right click the file and choose "open with" to notepad the data is garbled.

Is there a work around or a fix? Or is this due using XP with Office 2007?

Why are you trying to open an excel file with notepad?

It has nothing to do with your Office version. Opening any Excel file in NotePad is going to give you a garbled mess. You would use NotePad to open text files, but not Excel files.

If you want to convert your Excel file to a text file, open it in Excel and use the SaveAs option and choose one of the text formats (.csv, .txt., .tab, .prn).

I was inquiring as I am the product support person for the company I work for. The issue was recently brought up and wanted to know how to fix it when it comes up again.

Thank you for the explaination and yes; changing it with the optional extensions worked.
