Opening multiple XLS files in different excel instances

Hi

I am working in excel a lot and use multiple files at the same time. I would like excel to open each worksheet in its own excel instance and not combine them. Right now I cannot place them next to each other.

Anyone who has an idea?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

You need to run multpiple sessions of excel

i.e, open excel and open workbook 1, then open another excel session and open workbook2.

so do not open excel by double clicking an excel file

I always did double click and I think there might be another radiobutton to be pressed, but for now, as easy as it is (good old DOS time) I will start working with your solution.

Thats an interesting post and I think it raises the same question but reworded ....

Why is it that 9 times out of 10, if you open 3 or 4 files in Excel, the files open in separate instances. 1 time out of 10, they will open as windows within 1 instance of excel. I've noticed this myself and there appears to be no reason for it as the method I use to open files has not changed.

Anyone else encountered this?

I am pretty sure there is an radio button somewhere in Windows which will set the behaviour of opening files. I remember, way back, that I somehow got to get every xls-file to open a new Excel instance... But... don't remember how.

I will keep on searching and report the findings.

I have a feeling your right WS but I have another feeling that it does not exist in version 2002

You can always use 2 or more windows within one Excel instance :
menu Window - Arrange...

And with the short cut CTRL+TAB you can loop through all open windows

Hi,

To ensure that the second xl file is open in a seperate xl application goto Tools\Options\General Tab\Tick "Ignore Other Applications"

I can't use two excel sheets within 1 excel program since I use two monitors. I can put two instances at the two screens, but not the one program with two xls files.

I tried the other suggestion by selecting the Ignore other applications, but somehow my windows can't open any file anymore. It starts excel, than gives me error that it could not locate the file.

When the filename is: "Example Excelfile 16-10-2003.xls" it will give me the following error messages:
Can't locate the file Example Excelfile 16-10-2003.xls. If you moved... etc...

When I clicked OK it comes with:
Can't locate the file: Example
Can't locate the file: Excelfile
Can't locate the file: 16-10-2003

Somewhat strange behaviour.
