Over Due formula for Conditional Formatting

I have a column that we put the due date of something in it. So for instance line one could have the due date of 12/15/2020. I want to be able to make conditional formatting that will turn the cell red if after the date that is in the cell, so for this example on 12/16/2020 the cell should now have a bright red fill.

Is anyone able to help out with the correct formula than I can put in the Conditional Formatting "Use a formula to determine which cells to format"?

So the above worked great but wondering if we can add to the formula. So right now the formula for the sample file would be:

=today()>D1

...but I would like for it to un-highlight the cell if there is something in cell E1. That way when we have received files back and marked it in cell E1, cell D1 is not stilled highlighted red. Please see below for example file. Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide!
