I've posted this before, and a couple of kind folks have tried to help out, but either I'm a bit extra dense this week or I'm not explaining the problem just right, so here's another stab at it.

I'm trying to create macros in Excel that will be available to me in all my Excel files, not just the one I'm in when I first create the silly thing. And I'm having a hell of a time trying to get it so that the macro is available in all my Excel files.

I've been able to piece together that to do this, the macro needs to be saved in a file called personal.xls. I've been told that this file should have been created automatically when I first loaded Microsoft Office onto my computer, and that this file is usually hidden. Well, I've scanned through my MS Office files without finding it, even when I "un-hide" my hidden files. So here are my questions:

1.) Does the fact that I can't find it mean that I have to re-load MS Office, or get a more current version than the 1997 one I'm using?

2.) Is the file supposed to be in a specific folder that I'm not thinking to look in? If not, what folder is it supposed to be in?

3.) If it's something that I need to re-create somehow, how do I do that?

4.) Is there some other way to make the macros available in all my Excel files that would be easier?

Thanks in advance for any and all help you folks can give me!

Hi dpeattie.

No, you don't have to reinstall - you can make one.

typically the personal.xls is in :
C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeXLSTART

You can do this easily:

just open a new workbook, save it as:

personal.xls and be sure to save it in your XLStart folder.

When you open excel, what ever you have in your personal.xls will be there too. To confirm this, create the personal.xls, save it and then close excel. Open Excel again and go to the VBE - ALT+F11 - and look in the left hand window. You should see your personal.xls in the project list.

There is nothing special about the personal.xls, other than the name and the stored location. you can create your own.

The loaction for the personal.xls file is the XLStart Folder. normally found at,

C:Program FilesMicrosoft officeOfficeXLStart

Just do a save as of a blank workbook to that location. close XL, restart and it should autoload, customize as desired.

good luck
