Page Break Preview vs Printout

Hello,

A few weeks ago I formatted my long spreadsheet in Page Break Preview mode so that the pages break at suitable sections. I then did my editing in Normal View. It's 34 pages long and prints OK.

Recently, however, I went back into Page Break preview mode and there are now several "added" pages with dashed lines. Page break preview mode now lists Page 53 as the final page. I can't drag these dashed lines down to the solid lines.

My Print Preview and hardcopy printout are still on 34 pages, so all is well on my PC. I'm just a bit concerned this will cause a problem for another user when she tries to print it. I know about situations where different printers / drivers can re-format a worksheet, but this seems to be a little different.

Anyone run across this before?

Thanks!

Excel Facts

What is =ROMAN(40) in Excel?
The Roman numeral for 40 is XL. Bill "MrExcel" Jelen's 40th book was called MrExcel XL.
Hello Galto:

For testing purposes, i generally put the page number (and total pages) in the footer so that i can see on the preview page where i need to make some page length adjustments....but you say you can't drag the dotted lines anyway...ummmm...were there some rows or columns added after your last print?

.ResetAllPageBreaks is part of my pagebreaking routines, might be useful for you also.

In your situation, perhaps PrintArea needs to be set. Also consider Trim()ing the cells to remove spaces. Not that they print, but they will confuse .End(xlUp), if that method is part of your code.

Hi again,

Now things are even stranger. I opened the file again to check what the page numbering was saying on a print preview (thanks plettieri), and it listed Page x of 53! I scrolled through the file, and sure enough, there were 53 pages - with those new "dashed" page breaks in all the wrong places.

Back in Page Break Preview, I see that all those dashed lines were now solid! I tried dragging them back to where they belonged, but dashed lines remained at the places I dragged them from. However, the print preview DOES go back on 34 pages again.

It's getting close to Hallowe'en... Maybe a Ghost in the Machine!

Any Excelorcists out there?

There are only friendly ghosts here....

have you tried in the 'page set up' to limit the page length to 34 pgs?....then look in the preview screen. What is defined in the current page set up now? any scaling defined?

I sometimes have to play with these features to get it to fit my needs....

What does it say in page setup under scaling? Is there a % in there that shouldn't be? Or has a number got into the "fit to x pages wide by x pages long" section?

Well, once again, the folks frequenting this board have been my best friends!

Thanks plettieri and ThePencilQueen.

Setting the limits to 1 wide by 34 tall effectively re-set the solid page breaks - though it now fit everything on 21 pages :)

So, it was just a matter of dragging them where I needed them, and presto! Back in business!

Thank you thank you from Canada's Tropical Paradise... PEI!
