Page number in Footer can not be deleted....why?

Hi All,
I got one document file in Microsoft word 2000 and would like to ask my question for that solution. Since I can not find the related forum and guess it's same concept with excel document.
The problem is that I can not delete the footer number created by other resigned user. Any advices? Please let me know...Thnks
