# Percentile Calculation using student's t test

Excel uses a standard formula for calculating percentiles <TABLE style="WIDTH: 48pt; BORDER-COLLAPSE: collapse" cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=64 border=0><COLGROUP><COL style="WIDTH: 48pt" width=64><TBODY><TR style="HEIGHT: 12.75pt" height=17><TD class=xl65 style="BORDER-RIGHT: #f0f0f0; BORDER-TOP: #f0f0f0; BORDER-LEFT: #f0f0f0; WIDTH: 48pt; BORDER-BOTTOM: #f0f0f0; HEIGHT: 12.75pt; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffcc00" width=64 height=17>1+p(n-1)</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE> This standard formula is a bit flawed in that it seems possible to get a 60th percentile value that is below the average, which is not helpful for some analyses. So, I use vlookup to look up values for percentile in the student's t table. this is a bit cumbersome since the t table is put in a separate worksheet that is then hidden.
Does anyone know of a way to better automate calculating the percentile using the t test table in excel? that is, just a formula that would return the correct result?
Thanks.
