"Phantom" line in chart

Excel 2010. I have 6 scatter charts. Each looks at data from the same table in different way. When all of the data is removed from the table, each chart shows the same line segment (even though there is no data). The line segment is 1 unit long and occupied the gap between 1 and 2 on the horizontal axis of each chart. If I hover on the segment it tells me it is the last from a list of data in the "Select Data" table. If I delete the line segment it tells me it is now the NEW last entry in the Select Data table (and so on).

I deleted all of the various vba modules from the workbook, but the 1 unit segment remains.

Is this an excel artifact? Does anyone know what it is?

How to create a cell-sized chart?
Tiny charts, called Sparklines, were added to Excel 2010. Look for Sparklines on the Insert tab.
