Pivot Table compatibility

I have a user running Excel 2000. She received an Excel 2003 file that contains a pivot table.

When she opens the file, she does not see the data (she sees #VAL) instead. She tried to refresh the data.

Is there an incompatibility with the versions. I know that a user running Excel 2000 can read an Excel 2003 worksheet, but I am not sure about pivot table compatibility.

Format cells as currency
Select range and press Ctrl+Shift+4 to format cells as currency. (Shift 4 is the $ sign).
Perhaps the Excel 2003 file is using an add in that is not available in 2000.

Or it is using a user defined function.
