Pivot Table Filters

I have a pivot table that I want to filter by date. The date in the data source is formatted as short date, but for some reason in my pivot table filter it is a number (ex. 44,502) how can I change it so the filter will work?

Return population for a City
If you have a list of cities in A2:A100, use Data, Geography. Then =A2.Population and copy down.
