I have a basic data set of open work orders from A2:L2000. In column L, I have an "=" sign formatted as Webdings so the result is a colored circle. The problem is when I create a pivot table from this data set, the colored circle reverts back to an "=" sign and when I format the pivot table column as Webdings, the colored circle returns but as soon as I collapse or expand that row, the "=" comes back.

How do I get the formatting to hold in the pivot table?

Are you formatting the Pivot table field and not just the worksheet cells ?
I think because its not a numeric field you are not getting formatting options when you go to field settings.

Hover over the fields title until you get a black arrow (left picture below) then left click to select it should look like the left below,
then hover over one of the selected cells and right click, you should get a menu that looks something like the right picture below.
Then either in the left top font box or under Format cells, select Webdings

Solution
I did that and it was not working but now it is, so I must have done something wrong.

Thank you!

Glad it works now. Do you mind clicking on the Mark as Solution, so others helping out know the issue has been resolved ?
Thanks.
