Folks:

I can't group column items in my Excel 2010 pivot table. I guess you have to create a set based on column items, but that option is greyed out and not available. What could be the problem? In the mean time, i will experiment with dummy data.

Clarify: trying to group data columns not lable columns.

Thank you,
Rowland

Folks:

Maybe its not possible to group data considering it would require dynamic calculated items?
I created this pivot from scratch, no pre-existing groupings.
It's not an OLAP cube, regular pivot table.
The option to create set based on column items is greyed out.

I tried recreating a similar scenario with this online sample data:
PivotSales_dynamicsource-test-grouping.zip

Basically, I want to group materials, Overhead and Delivery under COGS in the column headers (fake data-not important if should be COGS type input). Note: Also already have COGS total in source data.

Can I do this grouping?

Thanks, Rowland

I came across a similar issue in Excel 2013; I wanted to create a set based on column items, but the options 'Create Set based on Row Items...', 'Create Set based on Column Items...', and 'Manage Sets...' were greyed out.

The solution: When first creating your PivotTable, check the box 'Add this data to the Data Model'. Adding to the Data Model enables the option to create sets.
