Pivot table unable to group dates

If I choose the source data for my pivot table as colums (providing for continous updating) I cannot group my dates per year/month.
Because Excel says I have zero empty rows for date (all rows do contain dates, so zero are left blank)

If I select the exact cells containing the data I can overcome this grouping issue BUT than I cannot update my pivot table without reselecting the source.

Is tere a way I can make my grouping work, without losing the ability to update my pivot table?

Thanks a lot for your reaction,
Anne-Marie

Excel Facts

Select a hidden cell
Somehide hide payroll data in column G? Press F5. Type G1. Enter. Look in formula bar while you arrow down through G.
Use a dynamic data source. See Debra Dalgleish's tip here.
