PivotTable formatting- from server?

When I create a pivotTable in excel I would like to format the various cells based upon the format_string from the SQLServer. I seem to have found a couple of references on the web saying that it is possible- but no examples yet on how to do it.

Any help would be appreciated, or links to relevant FAQs or documentation.
