Please help: Formula for Date Sort

My client gave me a spreadsheet with 1500 records. She wants this sorted on the column in which they entered birthdates in this format: 3/14/98. This is to be used for a birthday marketing promotion. I need the sort to be ascending by the month. I can't figure out how to do this. It will only let me sort ascending or descending by the year. Please help. I need this information by tonight. Thank you so much.....

add an extra column to derive month info:

=month(a2)

...etc
