  I want Excel to tell me all occurence (I do not want a count or number. I want Excel to color the cell) if it "contains" xyz condition. For example, I want to Excel to search for "976" regardless of position. For 914-976-1212, the answer will be yes. For 212-567-9764, again, the answer is yes. P.S. The spreadsheet contains over 60,000 numbers which made checking by viewing very cumberome.

Test for Multiple Conditions in IF?
Use AND(test, test, test, test) or OR(test, test, test, ...) as the logical_test argument of IF.

newyork.

1) click on cell a1 in your worksheet
2) highlight your entire sheet (ctrl+a)
3) goto format -> conditional formatting
4) change the drop down list from "cell value is" -> "formula is"
5) type in the box =NOT(ISERROR(FIND("976", A1)))
6) click on the command button "format..."
7) click on the tab "patterns"
8) select your favorite color
9) click "ok", then "ok" again.

hope that helps.
Ben.

Use conditional formatting. I put the following condition in A1, and used the format painter to copy it to other cells:

=NOT(ISERROR(FIND("xyz",A1)))

Hope that helps!

In conditional formatting...

=SEARCH("xyz",A1)

or, if case sensitiveness is required...

=FIND("xyz",A1)

will suffice.

Wouldn't Search suffice?

=SEARCH(123,A1)
