Positive/Negative Change indication

My apologies if I become slightly annoying in the next couple of weeks, but after two years of learning Excel VBA I've come to the realization that I do not know JACK about excel. :(

My question...

Lets say I have two columns A & B and I'd like to indicate the direction (More/Less) Column B moved from column A. If the change was positive between A and B I'd like to have an UP arrow on the right side of column B and a DOWN arrow if the change was negative.

Is this something that would be accomplished with Conditional Formating and Shape insertion? I don't want to change the arrow manually when the data changes. Kind of like you see in some accounting software.

Thanks.

If you make the font of column C Wingdings 3, you could do something like this

Excel Workbook
ABC
11001505
2100506
Sheet1

PHP:
=IF(B3=A3,1,IF(B3<A3,"i","h"))
(formatted as Wingdings 3)

You can use conditional formatting to change the colour.

Cool thanks.

Pretty sure it's not possible, but you cannot combine two font styles in a single cell, correct?

You can if the cell only contains text, but not if it contains a formula (I think).

that is correct, you can format any part of text when the cell contains text alone, if there is any form of formula in there then the answer is no.

If you are using 2007 it has a selection of arrows in the conditional formatting. Unfortunately it appears on the left of the number.
(in the same cell)

I don't know whether this is applicable to other versions Excel.

So 2 rows A and B and B shows changes

Select the Cell B.
Select Conditional formatting/New Rule

Leave as first rule highlighted. 'Format all cells based on value'

In format style select Icon Sets.
Select 3 Arrows coloured from the Icon Style drop down

In both the Type drop downs select formula.

For the green arrow select > and in the value =$A$2
For the yellow arrow select >= and in the value =$A$2

Ok then OK
