Posting code from other boards

Sometimes a question is asked and I know the code to answer it has been posted on another board. I generally point the OP to that site by entering the address of the site. I have found that some references in old posts on boards (including this one) link to sites or pages that no longer exist . Is it appropriate/legal/OK to post the code with the clear reference to the source site.
 
@pbornemeier - thanks for posting this. You've brought up a good point and we're discussing the legality of posting code from other forums. I'll let you know once we've come to a consensus.
