PowerPoint Links to Excel Painfully Slow

I have created a PowerPoint 2010 file that contains roughly 40 slides, each of which contain a quad chart. In each quad chart, I have link-pasted 4 objects from an Excel 2010 worksheet, two of which are graphs, and the other two which are areas of summarized data I have formated. There is a worksheet for each slide in the presentation, that has data specific for that slide.

My dilema is that when I open the pptx file, and click to Update Links, if I don't have the Excel file open first, it just goes forever, without completing the update (admittedly, I haven't been willing to sit for more than 15 minutes to see the results). However, if I open the Excel file and then open the pptx file, the updating completes in about 1 minute.

This is my first crack at linking Excel data to PowerPoint slides. Is this normal? There are going to be senior managers in the company that will be accessing these slides, monthly, and they will not have the patience to wait forever for the links to update, nor will they understand the reason they have to open another file first. Is there something I can do to help speed up the process, without having to open up the source file?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Pressing Ctrl+* (asterisk) will select the "current region" - all contiguous cells in all directions.
Re: Updating PowerPoint links to Excel not working

Anyone out there got any advice for a desperate PowerPoint user? Now when I try to update the links with the source Excel file open, it gives me an error message for each link it is trying to update, because it is trying to open the file, when it is already open. UGH!!!
