From the TOOLS menu there is an option PROTECTION > PROTECT SHEET... Explore that. You lock/unlock cells you want to allow to be edited by using the last tab in the FORMAT CELLS dialog box.
Sorry, I shoulda mentioned that. It's one of those things that when get it wrong for the first time, you stop and think about it and then smack yourself in the head and mutter "duh" once you get it... i.e. what would be the good of "protection" if you were to be able to lock/unlock cells at will with protection turned on?
