.PRN files and Charts

I have a problem with a Humidity Chamber that creates .PRN files for data usage, that we open up in Excel, make a chart or graph from the data, and insert it into a test report. In Excel 97, we could open the .PRN file, insert a line chart, and the x-axis was readable. We have upgraded to Excel 2000, and using the same process, we get an unusual result. Our x-axis time and date entries become a solid line across the axis, because we cannot change the scale under the Format Axis menu. There are options grayed out that were available in Excel 97. Is there a way around this, where I can change the grayed out areas?

Can you AutoAverage in Excel?
There is a drop-down next to the AutoSum symbol. Open the drop-down to choose AVERAGE, COUNT, MAX, or MIN
Under Format Axis properties, Scale tab, the Number of categories between tick-mark labels:, Number of categories between tick-marks:, and the Value (Y) axis crosses between categories is grayed. Under Chart Options, Axes tab, the Time-scale option is grayed. And under the Data Table tab the Show legend keys option is grayed.
