# Problem Counting/Summing based on values in other cells

I'm going crazy, and I'm sure it's easy...

I have a range with several columns of data. Based on the value in one column, I want to add the vallues in another column. Kind of like this:

Buyer's Name / Paper Name / Dollar Amount / Date Completed
Brett / Paper 1 / \$10,000.00 / 01/05/05
George / Paper 2 / \$20,000.00 / 01/06/05
Rob / Paper 3 / \$15,000.00 / 01/07/05
George / Paper 4 / \$14,000.00 / 01/08/05

I would then like to use the data to do summaries: i.e., how many papers per buyer, how much money per buyer, etc. Basically, a ranged if-then statement that would say to add the values in the dollar amount column in every row where the value in the buyer column is George.

### Excel Facts

Which came first: VisiCalc or Lotus 1-2-3?
Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston debuted VisiCalc in 1979 as a Visible Calculator. Lotus 1-2-3 debuted in the early 1980's, from Mitch Kapor.
