Problem with XY Chart Made from Data Columns with a few Blank Cells

I am trying to make a simple XY plot of ~1500 values. Some of the data in both columns, however, have blank cells. The problem is that the chart doesn't plot X against Y. It plots instead X against the row number. If I 'clear contents' in each blank cell, however, the XY chart works fine. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
