Hi, Guys.
Need help figuring this out:

We have a group of runners who are splitting the cost of a rental house after a 200 mile run in San Francisco.
The total cost of the house for 3 nights is $4,905.00
There are 13 runners.

8 runners are staying for 3 nights
5 runners are staying for 2 nights

How much does each person pay based on the # of nights they are staying?

Excel Facts

Shade all formula cells
To shade all formula cells: Home, Find & Select, Formulas to select all formulas. Then apply a light fill color.
Simple maths.

5 nights in total

4905 / 5 = $981 per night

981 / 6 = 163.5
981 / 7 = 140.14

Hi LBJones9339,

I believe it should be:

The 8 runners staying for 3 nights paying $432.79 each (for their total 3 night stay)
The 5 runners staying for 2 nights paying $288.53 each (for their total 2 night stay).

This is then the equivalent of $144.26 per person per night.

$432.79 * 8 = $3,462.35
$288.53 * 5 = $1,442.65

$3,462.35 + $1,442.65 = $4,905.00

Cheers,

AP

Ah, OP has changed the original problem.

4905.00 / 3 = 1635 per night

1635 / 8 = 204.375
1635 / 5 = 327

Hi Special-K99,

Not wishing to cast aspersions or be found guilty of finger-pointing; but I'm quite certain that your maths is flawed and your answer inaccurate.

If you check Post #3, this should provide the full details and correct figures.

Thanks,

AP

No problem.

If the cost of 3 nights is 4905 then that's 4905 / 3 = 1635 per night.
Regardless of how many runners stay each night surely thats 1635 / (number of runners).

Further, you say

The 8 runners staying for 3 nights paying $432.79 each (for their total 3 night stay) = 3462.35

But the OP says The total cost of the house for 3 nights is $4,905.00
You're 1442.65 short (4905.00 - 3462.35)

(Blimey, I hope this isn't someone's homework)

Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me.

As I understand it - the entire house is booked for a total duration of 3 nights; let's say Night 1, Night 2 and Night 3, and the total cost for these three nights is $4,905

For Night 1 and Night 2 - all 13 runners will be staying at the house.
For Night 3 - only 8 of the original 13 are staying.

Based on my understanding, described above, the costs outlined in my Post #3 work out perfectly, and add back to $4,905 (as shown in Post #3).

If I have misunderstood, then I apologise - but, without meaning to sound conceited, I think I am right.

Cheers,

AP

Ah, you could be right, I didnt look at it that way. I thought total duration was 5 nights which would be a fairly simple sum.
Your way sounds as though it could be right hence the OP's question.

Wait till OP gets back to us I guess :)
