Hi! This very probably has been covered before, but I can't find it.
I have set up a sheet for users to input amounts into. I don't want them to alter any headings or totals.
How do I best 'protect' the cells I don't want to be changed (ie messed up :) )

I get I can protect the whole sheet, but how do I 'unprotect' the cells they can enter into?

Many thanks, this has always confused me!

Excel Facts

Return population for a City
If you have a list of cities in A2:A100, use Data, Geography. Then =A2.Population and copy down.
You have to set-up both the sheet and the cells:

  1. Unprotect the sheet
  2. Unlock all the cells
  3. Lock the cells you want "protected"
  4. Protect the sheet

The locked cells will be safe from overwriting.

Select the cells you want to make editable.
press Ctrl+1
Select the Protection tab, then unselect "Locked"
Then protect the sheet.
Default should be "locked," but you might highlight All cells in the worksheet first, Ctrl+1 and lock them, then unlock your selected cells.
