Protecting Information Within a Cell

Let's say in sheet1 cells A1:A5 are names, and in B1:B5 are their salary information. In cell C6 I sum the salaries. I am going to hide column B and lock all cells in sheet1. I have no problem w/ that.

Let's also say I need the users to be able to edit all cells in sheet2. But if someone were to reference 'sheet1'!B1, in sheet2 A1, they would get the first persons salary information.

Is there a way to completely lock down the contents of Column B, so that C6 still calculates off of it, but it may not be referenced in another sheet or book?

How to total the visible cells?
From the first blank cell below a filtered data set, press Alt+=. Instead of SUM, you will get SUBTOTAL(9,)
