Query Speed - Linked SQL Tables

I have a general question. Suppose you link SQL Server tables in an MS Access Database.

If you write a query from another application (like Excel) to the MS Access database, how much slower would that query be vs. the same query directly to the table(s) on the SQL Server?

How can you turn a range sideways?
Copy the range. Select a blank cell. Right-click, Paste Special, then choose Transpose.
I think there are a lot of variables that will affect performance, such as complexity of the query, design of your database (indexes etc), size of data, resources available (computer processing speed, connection speed, etc). With all those variables, I don't think there is any "hard-and-fast" answer anyone can give you.

To see what the difference in time will be, probably the best thing to do is try it out yourself, and time each one and compare the results.

Maybe this is turning into an Excel question, but how can you time a query in VBA or ADO to be able to do as you suggested? Thanks
