query to another spreadsheet

hello all,

i have a spreadsheet (view) set up to query data in a second spreadsheet (data). the purpose of this is to allow many users in different locations to update 'data' while another group of users in other locations view and refresh 'view'.

if 'data' is open when refreshing 'view', a read only copy of 'data' opens in the application view' is in. how do i stop this happening? i would prefer a message popup saying "'data' is being updated, please try to refresh later". is this possible?

so is there a way (via vba macro) to check if another file is open before running the query? might google that...
