quick one (maybe) IF statement using date criteria

Hey all.

I just need to use a simple If statement comparing dates.

If the date in cell A1 is greater than 1/1/2006 then print 'y'.

=if(a1>1/1/2006,"y","") does not work. when i put quotes around the date within the formula it does not work either.

any ideas how to reference a date within that if statement?

IF(A1>DATE(2006,1,1),"y","")
