Recommended Pivot Table Feature

Just bought Pivot Table and Data Crunching.
On page 31, bottom, it reads, "Place your cursor in a tabular range of data and then click the Recommended Pivot Tables icon."
the data file i downloaded was not the exact one as is in the book, but I followed it and seemed to be on track.
At this point no matter where I place my cursor the icon remains gray and unusable.
Following direction, for me is cumbersome at best, but when I am trying to closely follow what is presented in the book and my screen does something else, i am at a loss to what the next step should be.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Even on a blank sheet, the button should work..
Are any other buttons on the Insert tab greyed out? If so - the sheet could be protected.
My other idea is that if you downloaded the file, it may be in Protected View, which severely limits what you can do with the workbook.
