Do you need to have a workbook open to reference it? I have a workbook that is used like a calculator for generating quotes and I need to be able to update prices in another workbook. Do I need to have code to open the workbook containing the calculator in order use it to get the new price?

Excel Facts

Format cells as time
Select range and press Ctrl+Shift+2 to format cells as time. (Shift 2 is the @ sign).
In reality no, Lets say you have a workbook called BookX and you want to use the value from cell A1 in BookZ the formula would be:

='C:\Users\?????????\Desktop\[BookX.xlsx]Sheet1'!$A$1

If it was located on your desktop with the ? replaced with your computer username, on entering the formula it would get the value from BookX and then close the workbook - so fast you can't see it.

Then every time you open BookZ it will ask about updating the value but again will be so quick you can't see it

If the other workbook is going to do anything, like calculate formulas, it will need to be opened.

If you just want to read a value that is in the workbook, you can do that with the workbook closed.
