Refreshing pivot tables causes the Excel 2010 file to become corrupt

I'm using excel 2010, my worksheet containing the data has approx 290 rows x 440 columns, then there are about 40 pivot tables, each on a separate worksheet. I have given the whole table a table name, and all the pivot tables refer to it.

At present the pivot tables refer to the 50 or so rows of data I had initially. If I refresh any pivot table (or all of them) and then save and try to reopen I can’t – apparently it is corrupt ('Excel found unreadable content'... [failed recovery]..'The workbook cannot be opened or repaired because it is corrupt'). If I do manual ‘open and repair’ then my data ceases to be in a table, and there are no pivot tables, just flat values where they once were.

Other relevant info:
- It's possible that some of the data was inputted in excel 2007 (I didn't input all the data, I just copied it into the main file).
- I have service pack 1; am using office professionals plus 2010, windows 7
- I have tried opening in vista - no good.
- I have tried unchecking the protected view options in excel/file/options/trust centre/trust centre settings - that once worked with a related file that was 'corrupt' but isn't helping this time.
- I have also posted this query to the Microsoft Community today, but things seem kind of quiet over there...

I’d be grateful for any suggestions. I so liked pivot tables until yesterday!
