Removing Built in Drop Down Boxes

I'm working on a raw data file received from someone else that has built in drop down boxes that are limiting the amount of manipulation I can do. Specifically, to create new columns and formulas. Is there any easy way in Excel 2007 to remove these types of drop down boxes and essentially "free" the cell?
thanks!

What kind of Boxes are they? From Data>Validation? List Boxes? Combo Boxes? Also, how does their presence prevent you from adding Columns or using formulas?

Hi...they were from Data Validation...your question sparked me to find the solution. Data Validation- Settings, and Allow Any Value vs. List.
thanks!
