I have to enter data in cells of the text '1R', 2R', etc. or '1L', '2L', etc. Could I setup a macro so the + and - keys on the keypad could signify R and L, respectively?

Excel Facts

Add Bullets to Range
Select range. Press Ctrl+1. On Number tab, choose Custom. Type Alt+7 then space then @ sign (using 7 on numeric keypad)
Not quite sure if this will meet your needs, but you could format the cells as...

0"R";0"L"

...which would display...

1R
2R
1L
2L

...when you entered...

1
2
-1
-2

Please understand that the cell contents would not be...

"1R"
"2R"
"1L"
"2L"

...however, the values that you entered could be subsequently converted to these text values using the formula...

=TEXT(A1,"0R;0L")
